New report shines light on sexism and ageism in ICT industry

A new preliminary study which reviews the participation of women and men in the ICT industry is calling for an urgent investigation into sexism, ageism and their combined impact in the sector.

Dr Amanda Lynn of Mandolin Associates conducted the study that explored data supplied by Statistics New Zealand from the Household Labour Force Survey of 2017.

Although women do the same work as their male peers and offer the same value, only about a quarter of the workforce in ICT is female.

At 55 years of age, the numbers of both men and women in the ICT Industry falls sharply, with the remaining women being paid less than their male peers, the report finds.


New Zealand govt to invest NZD 270 mln in UFB rollout

The New Zealand Government has announced it will invest NZD 270 million to roll out Ultra-Fast Broadband to 190 more small towns. The government has also extended rural broadband to another 74,000 households and businesses. The government has also brought the completion of the UFB network forward by two years. By the end of 2022, the country’s UFB programme is expected to provide more than four million New Zealanders with access to broadband services.

Dev Academy taps Maori spectrum consolation fund

A fund set up as an alternative to giving Maori an allocation of fourth generation mobile telephone spectrum could help 42 Maori into careers in information technology.

Enspiral Dev Academy, which offers fast-track training, says the Ka Hao Maori Digital Technology fund, managed by Te Puni Kokiri and MBIE, will fund the new Maori web development scholarships.

It extends Dev Academy’s Te Uru Rangi scholarship programme, which has been running since 2015.

Mavis Mullins to be inducted into New Zealand Business Hall of Fame

Former shearing contractor Mavis Mullins’   name will soon  be  up in lights alongside corporate luminaries Fletcher, Wattie’s and Carter Holt Harvey.

The Dannevirke-based businesswoman is being inducted into the New Zealand Business Hall of Fame which makes her feel humbled and proud, but also “slightly amused” to find herself among such illustrious company.

“For goodness sake. Me? Amongst that lot? OMG!,” she said….more
